Course Information
Description This course is the basic study of limits and continuity, differentiation, optimization and graphing, and integration of elementary functions, with emphasis on applications in business, economics, and social sciences. This course is not a substitute for MATH 2413, Calculus I.
Prerequisites Prerequisite: MATH 1314-College Algebra, or MATH 1324 Mathematics for Business and Social Sciences
Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
1. Apply calculus to solve business, economics, and social sciences problems.
2. Apply appropriate differentiation techniques to obtain derivatives of various functions, including logarithmic and exponential functions.
3. Solve application problems involving implicit differentiation and related rates.
4. Solve optimization problems with emphasis on business and social sciences applications.
5. Determine appropriate technique(s) of integration.
6. Integrate functions using the method of integration by parts or substitution, as appropriate.
7. Solve business, economics, and social sciences applications problems using integration techniques.
Core Objectives PSLO ALPHA: Demonstrates comprehension of content-area reading material.
Identifies all main ideas, supporting details, and vocabulary in reading material; demonstrates a full understanding of the reading.
PSLO 1: Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.

Grading Scale All quizzes and tests will open at 1:00 AM on the designated day and close at 11 PM the following day as indicated on the schedule.
Determination of
Final Grade
All homework will be done on computers using MyLabsPlus Free temporary access is available for about two weeks. Login at www.lamarpa.mylabsplus.com using your Lamar State College Port Arthur user name. The password is your birthday. Example: June 2, 1985 would be Jun021985. There are no spaces.
Course Policies
Instructor Policies Students will be allowed to use a scientific calculator of their choice.
Attendance Policy There will not be any makeup quizzes or makeup tests. A student's lowest test grade will replace a first missed test. A student will receive a zero for any missed quiz, a second missed test or missing the final exam. The final exam is required.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.

  1. No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

  2. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission.

  3. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
